Microsoft’s findings reveal how AI tools are being used to scan and scrape the web for company information, enabling cybercriminals to craft detailed profiles of potential targets. These tools facilitate highly convincing social engineering attacks, including fake AI-enhanced product reviews and AI-generated storefronts with fabricated business histories and testimonials.
Kelly Bissell, Corporate Vice President of Anti-Fraud and Product Abuse at Microsoft Security, emphasized the scale of the issue: “Cybercrime is a trillion-dollar problem, and it’s been increasing every year for the past 30 years. AI offers an opportunity to detect and close exposure gaps quickly, helping us build fraud protections into our products at scale.”
The report highlights significant activity originating from China and Europe, particularly Germany, due to its prominence as a major e-commerce market. Larger digital marketplaces tend to attract proportional levels of fraud attempts, underscoring the need for robust security measures.
E-Commerce and Employment Scams on the Rise
Two areas of particular concern are e-commerce and job recruitment scams. In e-commerce, AI tools enable the rapid creation of fraudulent websites that mimic legitimate businesses. Job seekers are equally vulnerable. Generative AI has made it easier for scammers to create fake job listings, profiles, and phishing campaigns. AI-powered interviews and automated emails enhance the credibility of these scams, making them harder to detect. Victims are often asked for personal information, such as resumes or bank details, under the guise of verifying their credentials.
Microsoft advises caution against unsolicited job offers, payment requests, and communication through informal platforms like text messages or WhatsApp.
Microsoft’s Countermeasures Against AI Fraud
To combat these emerging threats, Microsoft has implemented a multi-layered approach across its products and services. Key measures include:

Additionally, Microsoft has introduced a fraud prevention policy under its Secure Future Initiative (SFI). Starting January 2025, product teams must conduct fraud prevention assessments and integrate fraud controls during the design process, ensuring products are “fraud-resistant by design.”
